Capability + Opportunity + Motivation = Behavior

Remove any one component and the behavior doesn't happen, no matter how strong the other two are.

Capability

The capacity to perform the behavior, physically and mentally.

Physical

Physical skill, strength, stamina to carry out the action.

Psychological

Knowledge, cognitive skill, comprehension, reasoning capacity.

Opportunity

External factors that make the behavior possible.

Physical

Time, resources, location, cues, physical access.

Social

Cultural norms, social cues, what others do or expect.

M

Motivation

Internal processes that direct and energize behavior.

Reflective

Conscious intentions, goals, plans, beliefs about worth.

Automatic

Habits, emotional reactions, impulses, desires below conscious thought.
